Democracy dumbs down civilization.

This is the most absurd thing I’ve ever read. Both of them have a poor track record on the constitution. A weird fantasy people have cooked up in their head without evidence shouldn’t be the best of lemmy. It can be a fear. It can be a fear people talk about. But the best content of anything? I hope not.

Do you want to know why Kamala is doing poorly in the election odds. It’s not that she’s a worse candidate. People vote for or against social movements. Plenty of reason to vote against the MAGA social movement. But middle america is voting against the delusionment they see on the left and that they see on internet formums. This kind of disconnect from reality scares them, and they vote against your candidate.

Both candidates will do nothing about Israel. Kamala is maybe an ounce better on communication on this issue. But the genocide will keep going on no matter what sadly. It should be unacceptable to us, but if voting is our only mechanism of control its basically zero control over that issue.

Also it requires shipping oil to fuel the mining operations needed to produce full scale renewable energy. But if we wait a little bit the quality of power output from the same mining inputs will improve which means renewable later requires less total mining than full scale renewable now, and so you will use less fuel to do that smaller amount of mining.

What people don’t realize is that the expense of renewable technology mostly is fuel. Fuel to mine it, fuel to move the raw materials, fuel to refine it, fuel to manufacture it, fuel to ship it to you. The total labor is quite small. So if taken on a specific case the financial perspective alone of a particular application of renewable vs conventional energy the numbers don’t add up then likely the renewable is less green. If you wait a little bit for the green cost to come down that indicates improved efficiencies and now it actually is green.

So the answer to make the world more green is not to shift our calculations to spend money on green solutions beyond financial sense. It’s to work on technology to lower green costs until it naturally makes sense and thereby also make it more green at the same time.

But at least the ships need a non-renewable source. And they are going to need some of it in every country they visit. How do we get oil to every country if not by ship? That’s a lot of pipelines if we go that route. But maybe that is the answer.

It sounds like everyone but mods should be able to see voters. But of course they will use straw accounts. What if only votes on your own post/comment were revealed to you? Like some pointed out, they are already not anonymous to anyone who wants to try hard enough to get the data because of federation. So the question is who do we want to be able to see that data easily? It’s a GUI modification in any case. Who are we making the gui modification for?

For this user base it is the right answer. So many petty downvoters. On my site I’m considering a rule that would make it so you can’t be the vote that casts a comment into the negative without giving a reason, and then that reason would be turned into a comment. If something is worth downvoting then it is worth explaining why someone is wrong. If you can’t do that maybe you shouldn’t downvote. I don’t think you should have to do that every time. But if a comment is going to go negative someone should step up to the plate and bother to articulate. That way a comment can’t get hidden away from the public just because a petty mob that can’t even present an argument sees it as convenient if certain information disappears.

So in that case the downvoter who crossed it into the negative would not be anonymous.
