I need your opinion and suggestions on the best Lemmy client to use.

P.S., I currently use Voyager as my client.

    I really enjoy Sync.

I was using Voyager until Sync got ported over to Lemmy. Voyager is great, but I find Sync more responsive. I also really appreciate Sync’s appearance customization. I’m old, so I like cranking the size of some text.

I think there’s an ad supported version of Sync if you want to try it. I paid the CDN$10 or whatever it cost on release. It’s worth it to me.

I also really like sync. I also paid for the ad free version.

But there are still some issues and the dev is, again, inactive.

Yeah. As much as I like Sync, I’m envious of aeharding’s constant improvements to Voyager.

yep. i lived Avelon until development stopped, and Voyager passed it up. the continued development is the long term play. my only problem with voyager is it doesnt let you come back to where you left off. i leave the app to google up something before i post it and when i go to return the post has vanished.

          i want non-volatile Voyager.

Sync has had serious issues in the past such as an easily triggered, reproducible, guaranteed crash on open, with the dev not putting out a fix for months. This neglect goes back several years, to back when Sync was a Reddit client. Most infamously he disappeared for over a year when his UI refresh wasn’t well received.

The app is great (I’m only on Boost due to user tags requiring a paid subscription in Sync), but his response time to issues is glacial. And it doesn’t help that it’s by far the most expensive client if you want it ad-free, and features that used to be free now require an even more expensive subscription to use on top of that.

First I’ve heard of any show stopping bugs. Been running fine for me (lemmy and reddit) and countless others. Maybe some niche incompatibility with your device.

The crash I referenced was caused by having the scrollbar enabled IIRC, and it was fixed earlier this year. It made it impossible to launch the main activity without crashing if you’d enabled that setting, so users were sharing workarounds to launch directly to the settings screen without loading any communities so they could disable it.

      Big +1 for Sync.

I was paying for Sync back when it was a Reddit client, and I moved to Lemmy mostly because that is where Sync moved.

It’s an awesome app. Best app purchase I’ve ever made. (There is a free version too.)

      I find Sync more responsive.

I like cranking the size of some text

I’m on iOS and Voyager has many customizations and the ability to change text sizes. I’ve never noticed any issues with responsiveness.

Is this another one of those “well I was on Android and used sync vs well I was iOS and used AlienBlue / Apollo ” comments? Perhaps androids Voyager not as good as the iOS version? I guess it depends on what OP is using for mobile.

Voyager is definitely the most polished and great for those who used Apollo for Reddit. It is also very actively developed. For the Android users who do not mind the iOS aesthetic, Voyager is one of the few Lemmy clients on F-Droid.

Thunder is also a great option. I personally prefer its UX more than Voyager, but it is not quite as polished.

Mlem is a lot better than Voyager. Better features, faster, has fewer errors messages. At least for me.

I loved Apollo and appreciate Voyager but it doesn’t respect hiding read posts very well so I turned to Mlem which is now my favorite. The v2 beta is even better, adding easy markdown formatting and some nicer UI enhancements (the vote counter scrolling up or down on vote is a nice touch).

It’s fine but if you compare Jerboa side to side with Sync, you see that Sync is much smoother.

Use use jerboa! I like the fact that you can see downvotes although I’m not sure if it’s specifically a jerboa thing or some apps just don’t do it

I tried a bunch of apps last year and settled on jerboa. My only complaint is the inability to default sort comments by old.

Connect is cool, no ads, buy-me-a-coffee support

It features powerful filters that allows me to stay away from current usa politics (by keywords) and from websites I wouldn’t consume content (by URL)

I find its layout more legible, be it overview or listing communities etc. Also features direct links to overall instances, ability to switch accounts or browse other instances as guest

Dev is open to requests / suggestions (and bug reports) in c/lemmyconnect, tho their availability is spotty

Still a pretty solid app, with these filters being the one feature I need IRL. Fuck trump, fuck x.com, etc etc.

I loved infinity for reddit so I’m on eternity for Lemmy (a fork of infinity). The other I use is Jerboa. Haven’t enjoyed anything else I’ve tried, not that I’ve tried everything.

If you’re on android I can highly recommend Eternity. Open source and a fork of Infinity for Reddit; which is still going as a paid service post Reddit API débâcle. I loved Infinity prior to Reddit being a bitch and Eternity is just as great

Voyager is the best for me. Used Apollo for Reddit for years on my iPhone, so Voyager on Android just feels familiar and comfortable. Like sleeping in your own bed.

I’ve used Memmy, Avalon, and settled on Voyager because Apollo just scratched that itch like nothing else. There’s not really any terrible choice other than web/no client app.

Same. Summit is amazing and since starting to use it a year ago I haven’t even wanted to try anything else again.

And for reference I used to use baconreader for a decade over on Reddit. Summit has a similar vibe for me.

I used to use Boost for Reddit so I naturally started using Boost for Lemmy when it came out. But for some reason I wasn’t quite satisfied with it.

I’m currently on Thunder and have been liking it a lot. Don’t really hear it talked about much though.

If you’re on iOS, Arctic made some big updates that make it arguably better than Voyager IMO. The biggest thing that got me was color picker themes, so you can literally make your own theme (and save and share them). Also the markdown is pretty great now. Voyager is still pretty solid and very good performance and features.
