Is the source-code for this website available somewhere? Might be pretty nice to have for other instances as well.

It’s a bit confusing at first that it comes with a read only web-interface, but once you got a Mastodon app or an frontend like Phanpy set up with it, it works quite well.

Movim actually predates the creation of ActivityPub (and its precursor protocols) and back then XMPP was the popular choice, even Twitter experimented with running their service on an XMPP backend. But despite its age, Movim has kept up with the times quite well (as did XMPP in general).

Afaik it was an internal project at Twitter at first that was spunn off as a seperate company some time before Elon Musk bought Twitter. Jack Doresy only invested some start capital and was a board member for a while.

Should be fairly easy with some transparent corrugated plastic roof sheets. Make sure it is closed all around to prevent high winds from lifting it off, but also have sufficient windows for ventilation in the summer.

A bridge by definition does not make Bluesky compatible with ActivityPub and also does not make it part of the Fediverse. There used to be bridges to Twitter as well, but that doesn’t mean Twitter supports activitypub or is part of the Fediverse.

If Bluesky was just another ActivityPub using site you could just defederate from it. This isn’t really possible when there are many bridges that relay messages.

But you also seem to have completely misunderstood what people objected to about the ATProto bridge. It wasn’t the optional possibility to reach people on Bluesky. It was the automatic opt-in that most people objected to.

I didn’t claim that it wasn’t open-source. And a 3rd party bridge doesn’t make it compatible with ActivityPub.

Misskey and Mastodon are two different types of open-source software for running a social media microblogging website that can interact with each other through the ActivityPub standard.

Bluesky is a similar but incompatible software run by a single company that was founded by ex-Twitter employees and is funded by billionaires and cryptocurrency scammers.

They probably used on of these federation “helper” scripts that just siphons up the entire fediverse. That is just a bad idea and results in a bloated database like they were complaining about.

Voice call implementation in Gajim is only waiting for an upstream improvement, it is already working otherwise. Sadly upstream seems slow in fixing this.

Edit: and there is of course always Movim, which works fine in most browsers and supports 1:1 calls.

XMPP clients for Android are great, for iOS a bit less so. On Windows / Linux Gajim is probably the best option right now. JoinJabber.org has a good list of up to date clients (do not use Pidgin, it’s horrible and super outdated).

In general the main downside compared to Discord is the lack of voice-channels. 1:1 voice or video calls work great with the Android clients and group calls are partially supported in some desktop clients (that is currently very active field of development for XMPP clients).

Why wouldn’t XMPP work? It fulfills all your requirements and has nice modern apps, especially for mobile. Definitely better than Matrix.

The easiest to get started with it would be setting up a Snikket server (Prosody based, but pre-configured for small private groups).
