As a user, you can block either people or communities but not whole instances.
If you are an admin running an instance, you can do it through the admin settings.

Exploding Heads has never defederated lemmygrad. We invite diverse opinions, discussion, and debate.
I want to speak up in defense of the Lemmy developers.
I run an instance that is probably the polar opposite of Lemmy.ml.
Yes Lemmy.ml blocked us from federating, but when it comes to getting a Lemmy instance up and running successfully, 99.99% of the time the developers have been both helpful and generous with their time.
Give them a break. They have created some great open source software that can serve as a foundation of an exciting future.
I think the thing to stop this happening is for the user to own the identity they use on Lemmy - so if you do not like what gas happened on the instance you signed up on, you can easily move to another instance or social media.
Lemmy is open source. Lots of people run instances, so there are a lot of choices.
That is why I am supportive of something like self-soverign I’d
Point of clarification, Exploding Heads is not “anti lgbtq”
Once you are an adult, we believe you should be free to make your own choices.
But we are highly protective of children.
We do not believe they should be the subject of indoctrination, be subject to treatment programs that could sterilize them for life, or have breasts and penises chopped off.
We do not believe their parents should be subjected to threats - legal, social, or emotional blackmail by medical “professionals”
We believe sports are an important opportunity for our daughters to develop. We do not believe men should be stealing those opportunities from them.
We believe our daughters have the right to privacy in changing rooms etc.
You as an individual blocking their communities and users you do not wish to see is the best bet.
I want to avoid defederation where ever possible.
