I think it depends on the person. I’m usually fine with it but I know people who would be out of commission for two days after a single Doritos locos taco.

Yeah, I had never understood why people were so upset about Meta joining the fediverse but after reading that I do agree that there is a lot of damage it could cause.

Yeah I’ll agree with No Man’s Sky here as well. While sandbox type games aren’t my favorite (I do find the expeditions fun though) the amount of procedural generation is really cool.

Yeah I agree with the Mastodon suggestion. Lemmy would work but Mastodon probably makes more sense.

Does anyone know how profitable vending machine ownership is? Obviously nobody is making their full income on it but I see a lot of videos of people making $700 every week or two but not talking about owning/operating costs. I’m not really considering owning one or anything I’m just curious.

I didn’t necessarily think about some of the overhead that your comment brought up when I made mine. I like your idea about opting out of some features on certain instances and I think that makes sense for quite a few users/communities/instance hosters.

I 100% agree! As someone from the US I always disliked that even subs which were supposed to be global would default to being US subs unless the poster specified. I too love the idea of a global community and I think that assuming where someone is from kind of takes away from that.

I mean I could be completely wrong but I think that’s where federation actually comes out on top. Look at Reddit, apparently still not even profitable. However if someone on Lemmy owns an instance and infrastructure costs get too high they can stop new communities and users from joining until they get more money through donations or whatever ways people come up with sourcing income.

Again though, this could all be completely wrong and misled but that’s what I think at least.

I haven’t been on Reddit to see for myself however I believe I heard someone on Lemmy say that /r/conservative was making a big deal about NOT blacking out? I have no context and no clue why I just know I’ve heard people say that.

I think this comment 100% reflects how I feel as well, and I especially agree with your roommate. I’m a decently tech savvy person as well and between learning about federation and overthinking which instance to join it took 20-30 minutes to join Lemmy. I think the people in my life who don’t enjoy stuff like this as much will need me to help set up Lemmy or they won’t join at all.

I can’t wait to try out CS:2, however I hope the new improvements don’t come with too much of a performance hit. With no mods and only 1-2 DLCs I’ve had CS:1 chew through RAM and crash like nobody’s business. Still super excited though!

Is there any way to clone account/community data from one instance to another now? Maybe I’m a little confused on how this works but what if an instance decides to shutdown? Are all of the posts/communities/users on it just gone forever?
