Hi people,
I’m using a non NAS disk (Seagate Exos X18) on TrueNAS and a few days ago I found it degraded.
Now I’m planning to reconfigure the whole NAS in order to stay safe in the future even If don’t really know why it happened. My solutions are 2:
- buy another Seagate Exos X18 16TB to configure a RAID
- buy 2 NAS HDD, like Ironwolf PRO but having less space and spending more
Then I’have another option, buy one SSD sata for NAS, do I need a RAID to stay safe even if they are SSD?
What you think is the best option?
Thanks :)
Speaking from experience, I would recommend any of the NAS/Enterprise disks over your run o’mill desktop disks anyday. In my first NAS (ReadyNAS Ultra 4) , all 4 disks died within 2 years. I replaced them with WD Reds and 10 years most are still going strong. I had one fail just last month after 88,959 hours of continuous use. Stuck in new disk and back to normal. I have WD Reds, Golds and a couple Ironwolfs too. All these drives are on 24/7, either in NAS or server configs.
Cheers
