U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday that Canada has been “ripping off” the United States for years with tariffs on lumber and dairy products and threatened to place reciprocal tariffs on Canada as early as Friday.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said the “tremendous tariffs” Canada imposes on U.S. dairy and lumber products made it impossible for the U.S. to sell its products in Canada. He said unless Canada agrees to drop them, he would impose the same tariff on Canada.

So… he still doesn’t understand that the markets aren’t tanking because of the tariffs themselves but because of his random behaviour and outright lies?

Announcing tariffs once a month is bad enough, but this course reversal three times in one week is going to outright destroy any market confidence in his presidency.

“we just need certainty” - any American CEO bleating on behalf of shareholders that were willing to risk it all on authoritarian rule assuming they’d be on the lifeboat unharmed.

Remember how Trump was talking up his most excellent USMCA trade agreement? Now he doesn’t like it.
