I have a weird food intolerance called Fructose Malabsorption. Short story is I don’t really digest fructose by itself, but I do when combined with glucose. Table sugar is 50/50, and I’m fine with that, but HFCS messes me up a bit because it’s more fructose than glucose.

All that to say when I go out and get a drink, I generally avoid the fountain sodas because they’re usually HFCS. Instead I get unsweetened iced tea and add sugar. When I first started doing that, I was disgusted by how much sugar you have to add to it too make it about the equivalent sweetness as a soda. Like, in a small drink (US small, which are probably 15 oz), it’s easily eight packets or more. So I’ve been using three. That’s sweet enough for me for it to taste sweet without being overly sugary.

I live in California but travel to Huntsville Alabama for work sometimes. I went earlier this year and got a sweet tea while I was out. OMG it’s so sweet!

I can’t do the sugar into cold tea thing. It won’t dissolve quick enough to work for me. But I’ve found sweet n low or Splenda work pretty well. Though generally these days I just drink water, due to the aforementioned foot loss phobia.
