It is horrible. The only way people have egg laying hens is by killing the male chicks. This happens even with backyard chickens. Be real man.

It’s a cheap cop out from personal responsibility saying you only “buy local animal products.” You probably eat at restaurants or at friends’ houses without checking the source of those.
