I’m pissed about r/pcmasterrace not protesting. Anyone knows why?
in general I would assume any subs not participating are run by mods who value their mod status more than the quality of their community
Because the only people left there are the ones that forgot it was a joke.

yeah looks like it is
subreddit named after Nazi propaganda has bootlicker mods, wow, what a surprise
“subreddit named after Nazi propaganda”
Please.
r/PCHerrenrasse must have been taken.
And a grammarnazi is a person who kills jews that dont respect grammar rules.
Nazi propaganda
Wat
“master race”
But that comes from a joke from a Witcher 1 review. How can you compare one with the other?
I guess I’m out of the loop. When I hear master race I think of white supremacy, not a Witcher 1 review
Why assume the worst?
Because “master race” is a broadly known term, compared to a niche video game review. As I stated I am out of the loop having not seen this Witcher 1 review.
Must be a console user.
lmao, wat
The amount of dark subreddits is wild. I’m pessimistic that this will create any meaningful change on the platform, but really hoping either way that alternatives not backed by corporations will grow and compete.
If nothing else its forced people to consider the need for an alternative and to open their eyes to places like Tilde/Lemmy/Kbin/etc. It may not be much now, but over time if reddit continues it’s shitty behaviour and people now know these alternatives exist, more and more people can move over.
What’s Tilde? Tried looking it up but all that comes up is a software firm and a translator app.
Tilde is a Reddit wannabe. It’s the same kind of centralized, monolithic site that Reddit is, but its management hasn’t gone full asshole (yet.)
Then it’s useless. We need Fediverse alternatives not to keep jumping between proprietary monoliths that will be enshittified once people are lured in
That is why having several instances is useful, if we dont like one we can change to another one
Tildes is a Reddit like site, I have not used it enough to tell you more, but here is the address. https://tildes.net/
If nothing else it’s been very entertaining.
At the very least it’s a big fuck you to spez.
Plenty of those lol, Spez is a fucking jackass.
It’s at least something… If the userbase and Mods protests against the platform practice it must be a very frustrating thing.
Reddit’s CEO seems to be hardcore about it, still. Little Musk as I call him ;P
Agreed, it’s unlikely that anything will change with the current management. Just sucks in general
Just wanted to say that’s a very nice and clean looking page.
Seeing some subreddits go private as a pop-up in the bottom right while on the site gave me a weird sense of apprehension…
Reminds me of the scene in The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, where people are watching their galaxies go “foom”.
I enabled the sound notification, since I’m wearing headphones, and that made it even more eerie.
Yeah, me too - ting!
nice to see a hitchhiker’s reference!
Freaking spooky. Cyberpunk, even.
Wow, you can’t even login to reddit to check what subs are black now. Must be getting hammered to death…
Don’t even want to login to give them a hit.
Same
Unexpected attack on reddit? Hopefully it just makes the admins more butthurt that their userbase rejects their choices, but also, hopefully the subs that did stay open (to help people, like r ukraine or self help subs) aren’t interrupted too much…
I can open r/ukraine on RIF. 3rd party apps still work.
that’s irony
Most will shut down on June 30 when reddit is overcharging to use the api, essentially to force them out and make you use their app with tracking and advertising.
Yeah, that’s why I’m here. Ironic that the current status is that the site is down but 3rd party apps work…
Site seems to be back up now.
Ironic.
Reddit is just boycotting itself. Nothing to see here
spez probably got butthurt at the blackout and decided to blackout everything instead.
So are subreddits still planning to stay shut for only 2 days or are we extending that? Because 2 days does not seem enough for this.
A lot of subreddits will stay closed indefinitely.
I feel this won’t happen. If big subs continue to be dark too long, the reddit admins would simply remove the hostile volunteer mods and reopen the subs. The mods are used to being gods of their little domains. If they cross the line, they will be reminded that they own nothing. They can obey reddit or they can be replaced.
That is what I see in the future for any mods that try to hold subs hostage indefinitely.
A possible problem is that they would be forced to find new volunteers to run them. While I bet there’s many who want to be “gods” I bet it’s harder to find people who can do it well enough to run a 10+ million forum. Especially hamstringed by reddits lack of modtools.
So sure, Reddit can remove the mods and do it multiple times but it will continuously lead to a worse experience and sooner or later an unacceptable amount of spam, hate and CP will cause the advertisers to pull their ads.
This is absolutely true. There are often calls for ‘anyone want to mod’ on even smaller subs… and you know, it sounds fun to a lot of folks at first. But if you’ve ever actualy been a mod, even of a smaller community online? It loses its appeal very quickly.
Real-world equivalent: “You should run for HOA President!”
Or, union president. Or pto president. Or fucking president of anything else that’s volunteer run. Just. No. Some things aren’t worth it.
I am curious how much time you would say a mod spends a day modding
I’ve seen plenty of communities where it’s clear that the mods only stop by from time to time and they get by just fine, spam and malicious posts will still be a small minority. Some set automod on a shoot first, ask questions later setting where all reported comments get deleted until the mod restores them.
I really don’t think finding new moderation will be an issue. As much as it would be nice for Reddit to be screwed over by the mods it’s going to be a non-issue for them, there’s already measures in place to prevent subreddit parking and plenty of willing volunteers.
I feel like ad revenue is not their top monetization priority personally. It’s speculation of course. But I think they are learning that the free content the users create will generate much more revenue from mega corps who want access to all of it to train emerging AIs. Data, specifically YOUR data is valuable. What posts do you look at? What do you upvote? What do you downvote? What subreddits do you subscribe to? There is a wealth of information they will monetize. This is why I think they don’t care that the little app devs can’t afford their new API pricing. They can’t give the app devs one price then think Microsoft, Google, Apple and other multi-billion dollar corps would pay a higher price.
Again, this is just my speculation. But the suddenness and the exorbitant price means they want to act now, and capitalize on this new market while it’s good. Their terms of service specifically say everything you post, you give them a license to use, sell, or sub-license without dispute, forever. This isn’t about ads.
I was thinking the same thing. Probably why the timeline is so fast too with only giving people a month’s notice of the API costs. And could also be true of twitter.
ChatGPT and other LLMs are gaining a lot of value from information freely available online and sites with large user generated text submissions like Reddit/twitter want a piece of the pie.
The problem with this line of thinking is “why is 3rd party API data any less valuable than 1st party API data for AI training?” While this may be true, I don’t see this particular move being motivated by AI. They still have all the API calls and interactions even if they aren’t being made by Reddit’s own apps.
I may be wrong here, but what I mean is they have ways to stop LLM companies from web scraping all of Reddit. The only other way the likes of chatGPT can get all the info is through to API which is currently free. So I think Reddit might be doing is saying this information isn’t free so pay X amount for access to our data.
Obviously 3rd party apps like Apollo won’t pay that, but Google and OpenAi probably will.
I’m not too sure what you mean by api data being worth less or more, it’s all the same data.
I’d like to see the mods wipe the subs on their way out if reddit continues to ignore the community.
Sadly, I think you’re right. And with the wild number of bootlickers out there, they’ll be able to find new mods for those subs in a matter of minutes.
Edit: which will be hilarious since all the good mod tools are 3rd party 😂😂😂
these subs will turn into dumpsters due to lack of moderation and people hopefully will leave
That sends even more of a bad message to the users and I would expect even more people to leave due to all the fuckery going on.
I don’t disagree, that’s just the kind of response I expect will happen. I mean the CEO was trying to gaslight a major app dev, I feel like they will lie about and demonize mods that go against them.
I think at least some are waiting to see how reddit responds but I’m guessing they will continue to ignore the community and carry on with their bullshit
Two major subs called /r/technology and /r/programming just went dark. This seems to have reached great levels now considering that CEO /u/spez himself is a senior mod on /r/programming sub.
At this point, I think the most visited and interesting subs are already down on reddit, love to hear any exceptions which are still up and running.
AskReddit is still up, despite the number of posts I’ve seen on the subreddit asking for it to join.
Also /r/technology and /r/programming went dark only after lot’s of pressure from all sides and other subs.
Surprised r/programming went dark, considering its got multiple admins moderating it. I didn’t think they would, and they didn’t mention anything before I left
i think the mods made a post and said they want to stay ‘neutral’.
Congrats to…checks notes…/r/earfetish for being the 1000th to go dark lol
lmao!
I have learned about so many subreddits that I really wish I hadn’t, today 😅
As a longtime subscriber to r/wowthissubexists, nothing surprises me anymore. There’s a Lemmy equivalent to that, apparently. I’d link it, but I’m so green here I’d probably foul that up. Worth a search at browse.feddit.de though. That was one way to occasionally discover unique communities I never would have thought to look for. Hopefully it takes off here too.
That and seeing old friends go away.

I decided to check the front page (as in /r/popular, what people see by default) out of morbid curiosity since most of Reddit has gone dark now, and honestly it’s like nothing has changed for the casual user.
The biggest subs with the most traffic haven’t gone dark at all, and all the same posts and popular stuff still fill the front page, so for many people I suspect they’re not even going to feel this, but maybe it’s a bit too premature to be making this conclusion, let’s see what happens.
EDIT: I was somewhat premature with this post, even /r/popular is pretty barren as things move nowhere near as fast. That being said, it’s disappointing to see how much is still open, and how some subreddits (such as /r/pcmasterrace) are clearly missing the point by allowing “certain posts”.
I just checked all and popular, the top posts are all about the blackout. It did feel a bit empty, which is good.
I have multiple reddit accounts and on one my front page was literally blank so it depends on what subs you look at
Mine isn’t empty, but it’s very different from normal. Still lots of stuff with lots of upvotes, but it’s just so off. If I didn’t know about the blackout stuff, I would’ve noticed something was up still.
IDK, seems quite dessert in my end. From my subscriptions most are gone (except vim, vulkan, accidentalgimbli and some very small ones, shame on them) and the front page (edit: r/popular) looks very empty too, with very little posts (many of them from “not too nice” communities anyway, like there was an attempt, publicfreakout and such, which is kind of on brand)
I suspect curated lists will definitely feel a huge impact, but if I had to guess (and I may be wrong), most traffic comes from browsing the default front page (/r/popular). There isn’t quite as much content, but there’s still definitely a lot of the same stuff still around.
I could just be too early of course, as many are still in the process of shutting down and people haven’t gotten off Reddit yet.
hmmm… are we checking the same page r/popular? normally there is a new post every X minutes and now in the main page there are several >8h posts… I think is definitely noticeable and obvious (not to mention the three posts with information about the protest on very popular subreddits)
maybe you were expecting an empty page? that will never happen, if that would happen reddit admins would reopen subs or even upload random memes to new subs to make it “not empty”
or maybe reddit has local content and we are seeing different r/popular, I’m in Europe
I browse through a privacy frontend (libreddit), but I’ve never really seen new posts constantly on /r/popular, usually after maybe 30 minutes to an hour.
I definitely wasn’t expecting an empty page, but I was expecting it to be… different, but it isn’t really, it’s just all the same memes / politics posts that I’m used to seeing.
to be fair, when I say minutes I meant that I used to check out r/popular several times a day, not every minute, so 30 mins is perfectly possible. Normally I used to see “new content” every time, and quite a few posts, today doesn’t seem to “move” that much, although I haven’t make a very thorough study, I just woke up 1h ago and checked twice after reading your comments.
Also, most of it is super old (>8h) and the content is quite different, normally there are a lot of “everything” (“good” and “bad”), but today seems like everything is in the “negative” side (AITA, wcgw, dankmemes…) and some other subs that I have never seen. (quoting here since good and bad is very subjective)
But we may have different perceptions and that is fine.
I think you’re right, it’s been a couple of hours now and nothing has moved, I’ve also gone into some of the reddits still open and they’re all restricted, so really there’s no content.
I jumped the gun a bit there, now it’s time to try and avoid the site indefinitely.
same posts and popular stuff
I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but all the top post from today and yesterday are reposts of previous top posts. More so than usual. I might have tightened my tinfoil a bit too much, but it think the Reddit staff is busy posting popular posts to make it appear alive to oblivious and new users.
8 years, 11 months.
I’m going dark in solidarity. 100 minutes to go in my time zone.
Goodbye, u/mutisi0n. Goodbye, Reddit. It’s been real.
You’ll be ok! It’s time to move on!
Indeed, I almost lost 9 full years, lol. That’s alright, though. I really like Lemmy and I see that other like-minded folks are migrating as well. Please forgive our traffic! We hope to integrate smoothly
almost 13 years for me, which is kind of wild to say out loud.
going out in a blaze of mediocrity is pretty on brand, given how the site has been dying a slow, bloated death the last few years
I’ve read about selling the account, does anyone have more information? My account is 14 years old, it might be worth something.
How much Karma? Older accounts seem to sell for more on Ebay. It might take longer though. Search “Reddit” on ebay and you will see some listings. If you go to completed and then sold, you can see some accounts that recently sold. There was an 11 year account I was looking at the other day that sold for $70
Not that much Karma, I almost never posted, only commented :(
Deleted my icon from my homepage for sync on Saturday evening. Have had the odd craving but have managed to fill time with stuff I’ve been slacking on.
So thank you reddit for your money grabbing move.
I’m one of the new Lemmy users, fleeing from the sinking ship that is Reddit. Hi everyone!
Hey I just joined too. Goodbye reddit. No baconreader no reddit for me
in all my time I haven’t actually heard anyone else say they use Baconreader
I did!
Baconreader or bust!
I do!
Well, not right this second.
I used to but switched to relay a few years ago
Eyup!
it’s not bad eh!
It has actually blown my mind how many people got behind this movement. Overall the change was not something that would have ruined Reddit for most, but it was enough of a middle finger of the community that we all got riled up for it. I am proud to be a part of this movement!
It might not be affecting the general population of reddit, but I’d hazard to guess that it is affecting the moderators significantly. You only need to piss off the moderators enough for them to take their sub(s) private.
Holy shit over 2.5 billion combined subscribers. I’ve also been seeing quite a few people deleting their accounts, myself included.
It’s kind of a useless stat considering the amount of overlap.
Same here, I’m planning to delete my account on 06-30 and append a message to all my comments why I did so.
There’s also a Twitch stream linked at the top of the page. Join us in sitting around, watching, and chatting as the proverbial shit hits the fan!
if the site won’t load for you, the link is twitch.tv/reddark_247
Fascinating watching that, I’m learning about all sorts of subs I never even knew existed!
So. Much. Porn
I’d guess those subs have a relatively high percentage of mobile users, for… reasons.
so many nsfw/porn related subs (i was watching the stream of it)
Shit is collapsing. I hope the Reddit Board are enjoying a huge bowl of ‘Found Out’.
Seems like Reddit is completely down now. Frontpage hasn’t loaded for 15 or 20 minutes.
RIF still works lol.
That probably won’t last given Spez’s bullshit, but I gotta say, Lemmy is looking pretty promising. The Jeroba mobile app is a little underwhelming though, voting and replying to comments is a hassle. Maybe the RIF dev will make a Lemmy app or help improve Jeroba.
there was talks of the reddit infinity app possibly incorporating lemmy into itself
Never tried that one, my go to was RiF. Is that on Android?
it’s on android
Awesome, thanks!
The RedReader Dev had said he’s looking to include Lemmy.
Never tried that one either, I usually used RiF. Is that on Android?
Yep. You can get it on FDroid package manager or the Google Play Store.
Awesome, thanks!
How is it a hassle? It seems perfect-enough to me.
At least on Android, I can’t respond to or vote on responses that show up in my inbox. Clicking on the message itself does nothing instead of taking me to the message. The UI definitely needs improvements in usability but it’s still very much in development as far as I could tell.
I think it’s having trouble keeping up with the rush of users. I’ll admit though it’s pretty frustrating that my upvotes don’t register. I get “timeout” after a few seconds.
Yeah it’s really slow right now. Like you, I assume it’s because of an influx of new people but took me like a minute to just log in. Hopefully it’s not as bad once the rush of people starts settling
I only seem to be having that problem with Jeroba. In the browser it seems to work fine with the lemmies I’ve tried
At first it was both, couldn’t upvote on the browser or Jerboa. Since this afternoon though I haven’t been getting a timeout error on Jerboa.
Edit: nevermind it’s happening again. Maybe it’s happening due to server load?
Oh! I just figured that out – try tapping-and-holding for a second. Some menu options should come up then.
Thanks I’ll give that a try. Upvote/downvote/reply should all just appear by default though IMO
Miner’s android, I am using jerboa, and they are appearing automatically for me.
I personally like the clean presentation, but I would definitely be happy compromising with it being a setting we can choose, and defaulting to it being visible - sitewide, not just in the inbox.
If you’re using an iPhone, Mlem is in TestFlight beta. https://testflight.apple.com/join/xQfmkJhc
I’m on Android, but I’m sure other people with iPhones would be excited to test it out!
RIF’s dev is busy helping Tildes, but I’m sure with Rexxit many more experienced app devs will submit more PRs and write their own solutions.
Damn, I might give Tildes a more serious look just because of that. RiF was great.
So is the Boost app. Quick look at Reddit a lot of the usual players on r/All
