  • I do think they need to have a good sample size to get results that make sense, yes.

Doing some research on it, seems like Quinnipiac’s standard polling is conducted “in more than 20 states and cities as well as nationally” (particular locations not specified) and has typically 1,000+ respondents using random digit dialing. Meaning they just slap random numbers into the phone and see who picks up.

I can’t say I can immediately come up with a better solution right off the top of my head right now, but I can identify several problems with their approach, namely being actual size of sample (1000 respondents is 0.000003% of the population) and the way they gather their responses (when was the last time you answered the phone for an unknown caller? Now when was the last time your grandmother did?).

  • Nowhere in that statement did I call out Boomers specifically. This is a cross generational problem. I call out bullshit culture war voters which are, overwhelmingly, older folks. But they’re not completely to blame. There are plenty of younger working age people that fall for this same brain dead bullshit. But that’s what it is, is brain dead bullshit.

I’ve got plenty of real issues with all sorts of real shit, that’s just one of them.

I didn’t mean this in such a way as to call you out personally. Sorry if it seemed that way. I’m just sick and fucking tired of human rights being constantly stripped back for everyone and these fucking fools still just going along with it all happy and joyful because someone else is going to get killed to keep their retirement fund happy. With all due respect, of which exactly none is due, fuck that.

This isn’t an age issue. I don’t care how old or young anyone is. I care about them actively speeding us all into hell, collectively, because people think the DOW average is more important than the lives and livelihoods of our citizens.

Money is the root of all evil.

  • I walked in to a chiropractors’ office once to try and see if they’d take me for an appointment, found a brochure proudly proclaiming that chiropractic treatments can help cure autism and cancer, and turned right the fuck around and walked back out.

If you think you need a chiropractor you actually need a physical therapist and anyone trying to tell you otherwise is lying to you.

  • They aren’t some symbol of the end times or anything, they’re just a symptom of the sort of attention based economy we’ve built up here in America. They exist precisely because you can get paid to shill products while playing Minecraft.

If we reign in the marketing and advertising industries then influencers will fall alongside them.

Or, if we regulate “proper” ads and fail to do the same to influencers, whether on purpose or not, then they will become a primary source of advertising. Depending how this is handled could be a good or bad thing.

  • I wouldn’t even really call this a private forum, though. Anybody can join for free with minimal effort.

Now, SomethingAwful is a private forum, I paid them ten bucks to join. And to be honest I like their style. It’s a cheap one time payment for permanent membership but if you’re being an asshole and get yourself perma banned, you’re going to pay another tenner to rejoin. It’s a great anti-troll and anti-botting feature.

I don’t think that strategy would work well for the Fediverse and I don’t recommend it as such. But that’s what I’d consider a “private forum”.

  • Not every song is going to be a winner. But generally speaking:

    • Heart
    • Led Zeppelin (this one is more 70’s than 80’s, but I think my point stands)
    • Huey Lewis and the News
    • Bon Jovi
    • Hall & Oates
    • Journey

Just to name a few, all have plenty of songs without sex, drugs or violence.

If you sit down and listen to every album straight through, sure, you’ll probably find a song that talks about sex. Because humans have been singing about sex for as long as we’ve known how to sing. It’s not forbidden knowledge for teenagers, they’re allowed to know that it exists. Some genres go overboard with it - a lot of modern rap, for instance - but you’re essentially arguing that an entire decade’s worth of a genre of music is just all trash that only talks about sex and drugs. That’s just silly, and definitively untrue.
