Political books are the ones everyone SHOULD read. :)
This one is fascinating, we would be better off if more people read it:

Actually, all of Johnston’s stuff is fascinating.
Awesome, thank you for the book!
Edit: word
Yeah, “What Killed Capitalism” is an attention-getting subtitle, but I’m pretty sure Wall Street still exists… and will continue to exist for quite a while.
Whether it’s changed so much that we shouldn’t call it capitalism any more is debatable, but it ain’t what it used to be.
yeah. and what killed capitalism is also capitalism itself. capitalism is flawed.
That will certainly go on my list of books that I should probably get around to reading some day.
Yes, in the wait-list of books to read pile!
I usually move them up in the list. This book would be one of them.

Well, this person is an economist, so you would learn his view points. You would agree or disagrew with his thinking, which os good to learn new ways of thinking, IMO.
He has videos where he debatea people on the subjects he writea books on.
At the end of the day we all have our preferences, so all is well!

All is good, thank you for the input!
I do. Sometimes it’s frustrating if I don’t have enough background and drop them.
Oh, got it.
Background is required for learning about any topic. Yanis does a great job, usually, when talking about any topic.
He has many videos on the subject, a couple of debates also.
nope. i read for entertainment and these kinds of books just aren’t entertaining to me.
Got it, thanks for the reply!
Books with clickbait titles that rage bait you with a clearly false premise?
Not so much.
Clickbait doesn’t bother me as much as it used to. If I watch or read it and it does not have substance then yes, I will be more cautious on reading/watching whatever they put in the future.
False premise, not sure I could agree with you on that, but to each their own.
Have a great day!
edit: missed word
False premise, not sure I could agree with you on that
I must have missed how the capitalist society I live in is already dead… Or else Yanis’ missed that bailout he failed to prevent.
He is basically just complaining because capitalism in reality doesn’t exist the way he thinks it should in his head, and so he wants us all to support a capitalism that will never accomplish the goals he believes it will.
If I watch or read it and it does not have substance then yes, I will be more cautious on reading/watching whatever they put in the future.
I’ve actually fallen for his rage bait before and read some of Yani’s other work on the subject, and that was pretty much the impression I got: reactionary apologetics without substance. He’s clearly read Marxist works, I’ll give him that, but he wields the language to self-defeating liberal ends (and indeed he is quite wealthy and I supports a SocDem agenda). In fact self-defeating is a great summary of his career, imo. It’s unsurprising to me that he failed as a politician - I only wonder what would have happened if someone more effective had been in his position. He also got played by Merkel while in office, and must have realized it because eventually his post-office writings come at her with a vengeance that betrays him.
So yeah, I see a clickbait title, and I’m going to avoid it unless I here solid recommendations from elsewhere. I learned that lesson through experience. I will never be able to read everything that I want to so I don’t like wasting time on books that wave red flags right on their cover.
Awesome, thanks for the explaination!
Usually, I don’t hear that much on a counter to Yanis.
Appreciate the time you took to explain, do you have any videos or debates/talks where people call out Yanis?
I am bias toward Yanis, but I will always try to see the counter to whoever I am for. I do not like being in a bubble.
I’m sorry, I won’t be very helpful, I don’t watch many videos or debates. I recall an article a few years ago on this Techno Feudalism, but I’ve forgotten what or where.
My criticisms of him are based on my own understandings of Marx/Engels/Kropotkin/etc. (in particular Das Kapital) and how I perceive his platform in light of that. For example, a UBI would be captured by inflation and rent-seeking without other more meaningful systemic reform. And the basic SocDem platform of capitalism with social safety nets was originally conceived of as a right-wing way to strengthen capitalism and prevent rebellion against the capitalist class. These things reform a system so that it can live to exploit another day. It makes no sense - and appears to be ineffective in practice - to adopt a broadly capitalist platform in order to rail against what are fundamentally capitalist traits.
Also serfs reportedly received more of the profit from their labor than most workers today receive under capitalism. Capitalism failing to provide any semblance of equality or fairness is not a sign of reversion to feudalism - it lacks the particular reciprocal power dynamics that define feudalism, however imbalanced those dynamics were.
That’s my two cents, anyway. You’re two cents are worth just as much if you get something out of his writing. I come loaded with my own biases and I’m sure they deprive me of recognizing potential value on a daily basis.
Not really. Like I have read books about economical systems and the like but the writing is usually quite dry and uninteresting, I can usually get through it if the subject is interesting enough to me but not commonly. Not even close to as bad as the time someone recommended I read something by Immanuel Kant, i haven’t even attempted to read philosophy since, that guy should have gotten someone else to write down his ideas.
Wow, oh, okay.
Yanis speaks and talks about the subjects he writes about, so I presume it may not be as dry and uninteresting as other works, IMO.
I do try to learn and follow politics and debates, so if you are not into that, I understand!
For me, I’ll generally find the theses and arguments of books like this interesting so I’ll try to read them. In the end, I could have gotten as much out of the books if they had been 90% shorter and I’ll quit less than halfway through
Yeah, some books are just long to meet a quota… it feels like.
I can’t stand them. Whether I’m politically excited or not about the title, I just find books like that boring AF.
If smart were money though, I’m maybe… low six figure salary? Def not rich.
I don’t know if that classifies my intelligence for you, but I know what it means. Maybe those books are above my pay grade.
All is good, we all have our preferences.
