Generally speaking violence is for when changing minds has failed and you’re ready to settle for changing others’ behavior.
Long term, someone forced to respect you can learn to respect you more naturally, but in the short term violence begets compliance without empathy.
Long term, violence can pave the way for real respect though. It can snap someone out of a trance, where they’ve been mistreating you because they forgot you were human. You remind them that, unlike a piece of furniture, you have fangs.
That forces them to look at you. After they look at you for a while, there’s a possibility of real consideration.

I don’t remember the name but I watched a thing that mentioned short film where a robot killed their owner after the owner said they would scrap them in self defense. Then all humans went “they’re killing us! my own robot I abuse could kill me too!” and genocided the robots, including a brutal scene where several people ripped a human girl apart while she screamed that she’s real.
It was an example in passing but man did it sticks with meAnimatrix. Two part episode called The Second Renaissance about the backstory of The Matrix. The rest of the Animatrix episodes are fun or interesting, but The Second Renaissance is really something else. One of those things that leaves you glued to the screen the whole time.
thanks for the name, I’ll probably give it a watch sooner or later!
